At one point in my life, I thought it might be fun to be a writer. But I kept getting stuck on naming characters. It’s a complex thing— and it says so much about who they are.
Flash forward to today. Photographer. Me. Finished work. Sometimes, the name comes easily— as I’m tweaking contrast or color balancing. Sometimes, I know it from the moment my finger pulses to click the shutter.
Then, there are those times that it seems that the answer may never come.
Many artists will release photos or pieces as “Untitled,” but that’s always struck me as incomplete. I’m not that artist. Would you spend time to craft and create a beautiful piece for the world only to not give it the proper pass by naming it, formally? If Disney had called it “Unnamed Water Ride with Pirates” would it have the same appeal? Would Wonder Woman stir the same sentiment if she were “Unnamed Person With Lasso”?
The name matters!
The other day, a song cycled through my Apple Music playlist that I’ve heard probably 100 times. But I heard a lyric in it (that I’ve heard 100 times before) for the 1st time.
And it struck me-- like the final piece to a puzzle-- completing this picture.
“You don’t have to dream it all, just live a day.”
Awful deep for an 80’s pop tune.
The song: “Save a Prayer” by Duran Duran.
Just as the song has many interpretations in the public eye, I’ll leave the interpretation of this piece to the viewer.
“Just Live a Day” captured on the coast of Mumbai, India in December 2017.
