We were tracking a coyote when we came upon a herd of bison in the Black Sand Basin area of Yellowstone in Feb. This calf was off, separated from the group, standing by this geothermal pool in heavy snowfall. Even as we followed a boardwalk trail beyond it to lay eyes on the coyote, the calf stood still, only moving it's head to look in the direction of the coyote as it moved in the distance.
Female bison typically herd together while male bison mostly travel alone. This group grazes for food along a creek in snowy Yellowstone National Park
A small geothermal stream is all that runs between a family of bison and a coyote.
