I Am America
Juxtaposed against patriotic colors, this bronze Bostonian street performer brought to mind a poem I was taught in grade school-- the voice of America calling to immigrants across the globe,
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me." The poem, "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus, is printed and mounted on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. Our Bronze Lady, like Lady Liberty, says so much about who we are as a country: freedom, liberty, love. Truth, justice and the American way, right? Open arms of acceptance. Open hearts that resonate joy and a genuine concern for humankind... all humankind. I am America.
